A Film That Has Aged Well
This movie version of the Carlotta Monti memoir was not well received when it first came out in the 1970s. About the only person whose career did not suffer was Valerie Perrine as Miss Monti, whom Vincent Canby in The New York Times called a "spectacularly beautiful woman who might be a good actress." Yet others as time has passed actually fared well, especially the marvelous Billy Barty as "Ludwig," a midget actor who makes the journey for Fields to California possible after the comedian loses all his money to a crooked investment counselor. John Marley is very good as Paramount executive Harry Bannerman. Though underutilized, it was great to see the recently deceased Allan Arbus as director Gregory LeCava.
w.c fields and me
A very good film on a very classic actor of comedy. The actor did a good job playing him as well as others. A must see for fans.
