Career Woman

A discovery!
I must confess, I'd never heard of this 1936 Fox film, and it seemed to me an unlikely choice to be included in the initial batch of Cinema Archive releases.

However, I've now watched it and can say that it's not a bad little drama, with good performances from Claire Trevor, as a newly qualified lawyer, and especially Isabel Jewell, as the girl accused of murder whom she defends.

It's a real programmer movie, better than a 'B' but not really an 'A' picture. Leading man Michael Whalen again seemed to have little screen personality and only average looks, it's hard to imagine how he became briefly a leading man at Fox although by this time he was beginning to wane (Mr Power was on the horizon by then!).

Really enjoyed discovering this - the print used is fairly good, not digitally restored but with no major problems that I could see. It's really great that eventually Fox have woken up to the market for their vintage titles - let's hope many more...
